Maratha Ralley

Maratha People Ralley

in Bidar.

Reservation Facility Demand Ralley in Bidar.

Today 19th OCT 2016.

Maratha community members organised a massive rally in Bidar on Wednesday, seeking reservation and other benefits. While the organisers claimed that over one lakh persons attended the rally, the police counted at least 50,000 attendees.

Protestors carried flags and placards written in Marathi and Kannada, but no slogans were raised as it was supposed to be a “Mooka Morcha” or silent rally.

The rally started at the Paapnash temple gate on Zaheerabad-Nanded road. Police stopped the innumerable vehicles carrying the protestors at Naubad on the outskirts of the city. The protestors walked between 3-6 km, depending on where their vans were parked, before the rally ended at the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

It seemed protestors from neighbouring districts in Telangana and Maharashtra had driven in to Bidar. The announcers who spoke from a jeep that moved along the rally, thanked fellow Marathas from Latur and Nanded districts in Maharashtra and Sangareddy and Nizamabad districts of Telangana.

Road block

The rally occupied a large portion of the Zaheerabad -Nanded highway that passes through the city. The road remained blocked for hours. Initially, the police had blocked only one side of the road, but the protestors occupied both sides. No vehicles could move on the main roads from around 11.30 to 3 p.m.

The streets turned saffron with many protestors holding the Nandi Dhwaj, the flag of medieval Maratha King Shivaji Maharaj. Men wore cloth and synthetic caps with the words “I am Maratha”, “Reservation” and “Maratha Kranti Mooka Morcha.”

Women power

Women seemed to make up at least a third of the crowd. Several women marched along holding babies and bags. The only people who spoke at the rally were a group of 11 girls, chosen from the five taluks. They sang songs, recited shlokas from the Bhagawad Geeta, made speeches and read out the memorandum in Marathi and Kannada. This team handed over copies of the memorandum, addressed to Chief Minister Siddharamaiah, to Assistant Commissioner Venkat Raja.

Superintendent of Police Prakash Nikam had ensured detailed security arrangements. A team of over 500 police personnel were on duty. They included civil police, and members of two Karnataka State Reserve Police platoons and four District Armed Reserve companies. Police used three drones to keep an eye on the rally, especially in busy junctions including Shivaji Chowk, Rotary Circle and Ambedkar Circle.

Though politicians including MP Bhagwant Khuba, MLA Prabhu Chouhan and BJP district unit president Shailendra Beldale participated in the rally, they were not seen on the stage put up before the DC office.

Maratha community leaders from the district including ZP vice-president Prakash Patil, Baburao Kalasdal, Baburao Karbari, Pradeep Biradar, and M.G. Mule were present.

Air Force Day

iaf_8th_octoberAir Force Station, Bidar is one of the Premier Flying Training establishments of the Indian Air Force.

Its primary responsibility is to secure Indian airspace and to conduct aerial warfare during a conflict. It was officially established on 8 October 1932 as an auxiliary air force of the British Empire and the prefix Royal was added in 1945 in recognition of its services during World War II.

It was established during World War II, has been a training centre for budding pilots of the IAF since 1963. The air base had trainer aircraft like HT2 and various variants of Kiran aircraft for nearly four decades.

After India became independent from the United Kingdom in 1947, the Royal Indian Air Force served the Dominion of India, with the prefix being dropped when India became a republic in 1950. Since independence, the IAF has been involved in four wars with neighbouring Pakistan and one with the People’s Republic of China. Other major operations undertaken by the IAF include Operation Vijay, Operation Meghdoot, Operation Cactus and Operation Poomalai. Apart from conflicts, the IAF has been an active participant in United Nations peacekeeping missions.

The President of India serves as Supreme Commander of the IAF. The Chief of Air Staff, an Air Chief Marshal, is a four-star officer and commands the Air Force. There is never more than one serving ACM at any given time in the IAF. The rank of Marshal of the Air Force has been conferred once, to Arjan Singh, by the President of India on 26 Jan 2002 and he became the first five-star rank holding officer of IAF & serves as the ceremonial chief.

Now it has been remodelled and refurbished for the arrival of the Hawks. The runway has been extended to 9,000 feet and new facilities for aircraft and engine maintenance and testing are built.

It is home for the second biggest training centre in the country. Graduates from the Air Force Academy come here to learn the skills and techniques to become a next generation fighter pilot before being assigned to one of the combat units of the world’s fourth-largest air force.

Around 60-90 sorties per day are flown from the base thereby generating the highest amount of single-engine flying hours in the country from this air base.

Once the home base for 52nd Squadron, the station now houses the three Hawk Operational Training Squadrons (HOTS-A Aggressors, HOTS-B Bravehearts and HOTS-C Cheetahs).

In addition the Weapon System Operators’ School also functions here. A fourth Squadron is ready to be raised shortly. In a phased manner, 66 Hawk aircraft are to be added to the AFS Bidar.

iaf_womenBidar is a Platform for Creating History where FIRST THREE Female Pilots — Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh were inducted in Indian Air Force fighter squadron on Saturday.

On successful completion of their training, the trio were formally commissioned by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. Being the first to break barriers, they were the cynosure of all eyes at the parade in their immaculate turnout. On completion of their Stage III training at Bidar in adjoining Karnataka next year, they will get to fly fighter jets like the Sukhoi and Tejas.

District Hospital Confusion

Confusion over who should head the district hospital is causing inconvenience to patients in Bidar.

21bg_bidar_hosp_22_2981802fIn the last couple of weeks, the State government has issued four circulars appointing two different officials as the head of the 300-bed hospital. The district surgeon from the Health and Family Welfare Department and a medical superintendent from the Medical Education Department have assumed charge of the hospital, on rotation basis.

This has affected the day-to-day administration of the hospital and caused confusion among doctors. Signing of files, deputing of officers and other routine tasks are being affected. Approving X-rays and additional diagnostics, certifying autopsies, getting advanced medication of patients and/or extending their stay in the hospital, procuring anti-snake venom, etc. need approval from the head of the hospital. “We are tired of running from one office to another for these tasks every day,” a doctor said.

No clarity

The government does not seem to be clear on the issue. In a letter on June 25, the had issued orders for the government medical colleges in Karwar, Kodagu, Koppal, Gadag, Kalaburagi and Chamarajanagar, which all are attached to hospitals, conferring administrative control of the district hospital to the dean/principal of the medical college. Interestingly, Bidar was left out of the order.

For the last few years, Shivakumar Shetkar, medical superintendent from the Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences (BRIMS) has been supervising the hospital. A few days ago, C.S. Ragate, district surgeon, took over as the government said the hospital belonged to the Health and Family Welfare Department. In a week, Dr. Shetkar was instructed by the Medical Education Department to take charge of the hospital. Then, in a few days later, the government issued another order giving back the charge to Dr. Ragate. In the meantime, C. Channanna, BRIMS director, wrote to the government seeking clarification on the issue. As of now, both the officers remain posted in the district hospital.

District in-charge Minister Eshwar Khandre maintains that the issue has been sorted out. “Health Department secretary Shalini Rajneesh has confirmed to me that the hospital will remain under the Health and Family Welfare Department. In order to ensure coordination, the district surgeon, who belongs to the Health Department, will report to the BRIMS director,” he said.

However, teachers in the medical college say this system may not work well. The government has announced that it will increase the intake of BRIMS from 100 to 150. “To seek permission to do so from the Medical Council of India (MCI), the government needs to prove we have a 750-bed hospital. The district hospital has 300 beds and the new hospital building has place for 450 beds. Therefore, we need to pool these beds and present our case before the MCI. If one hospital runs under the college and the other under the Health Department, our case may be weakened,” a senior professor said.

When asked about this, Mr. Khandre said he was aware of the issue. “I will hold detailed discussions with the Health Minister and Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil and make the arrangements to ensure we are prepared for the MCI inspection,” he said.

Tiranga Yatra

Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party took out a bike rally here on Saturday as part of the party’s Tiranga Yatra. They shouted Jai Hind, Vande Mataram and other slogans and sang patriotic songs. Bhagwant Khuba. MP, led the rally on a motorcycle. The former MLA, Prakash Khandre, rode pillion with Mr. Khuba. BJP district president Shailendra Beldale, general secretary Ishwar Singh Thakur and partymen Vijay Kumar Patil, Baburao Madakatti, and Shashi Hosalli were present.

The yatra commenced from Ganesh Maidan and culminated at Bhavani temple in Devi Colony here.
